Back to Exeter Cathedral Bomb Damage

Bomb damage repairs, 1946, Exeter

Photograph showing bomb damage repairs, 1946, Exeter

Medieval flying buttresses support high walls above the Nave of the Cathedral at the level of the clerestory windows. Two of these buttresses, which also formed the side walls of St James’ chapel, were destroyed by the bomb. Temporary scaffolding support was put in place immediately to save the surviving walls and vault until this was replaced by the new buttresses which can be seen in this photograph. The photographer is standing on the damaged lead roof of the South Quire Aisle to take this image giving a dramatic view along the line of flying buttresses, looking towards the East end.
