Bomb damage to St. James's Chapel, Exeter Cathedral, c1942, Exeter
Photograph showing the bomb damage to St. James's Chapel, Exeter Cathedral, c1942, Exeter
This photograph pictures a time after work had begun to secure the building against the weather. Dean Carpenter recorded that the clerestory windows, as seen here, were fitted with a double wooden frame and filled with asbestos sheeting which was easier to procure than timber at that time. Panels of Sunralite were inserted to allow light into the building where fine Victorian stained glass had previously been. Extensive scaffolding supports the walls of the aisles, taking the place of missing flying buttresses. These two buttresses also formed the side walls of St James’s Chapel and were rebuilt from ground level.
