Niche in the outer wall of Bishopsteignton Church, c1860, Bishopsteignton

Engraving of niche figures in the tympanum above the south door, at the Church of St. John the Baptist, Bishopsteignton. The tympanum is Norman, likely 12th century, and depicts the Adoration of the Magi. H. W. K after S. W. R. del.

This image depicts the niche prior to its later restorations, which saw the columns restored and the area in the Virgin Mary's arms filled in. It is likely that originally, she was holding a carved baby Jesus. The remainder of a guiding star might appear to the left, cut off by the rounded edge of the arch which was possibly a later addition.
