Burrator Dam, Burrator Reservoir, c1900, Dartmoor

This photograph shows Burrator Dam in the 20th century, one of a series of dams built to supply drinking water to the people of Plymouth and other developing towns in Devon. Burrator Dam is one of two dams that serves Burrator Reservoir, a project overseen by the then Water Engineer for Plymouth, Edward Sandeman, (1862-1959). Construction of Burrator dam began in 1893, and the Sheepstor Dam was begun the following year. The reservoir was opened in September 1898.
