This is very much one of the stock images showing Exeter Guildhall and the High Street. Prints and photographs of the view can be found in numerous books of illustrations and guidebooks of Exeter. This particular photograph was probably taken around 1900 and shows the Guildhall and High Street, looking from the Turk's Head towards Queen Street and beyond. It was certainly taken before 1905, as the electric tramway was opened in the April of that year and there are no tram tracks in this picture. A horse tram service had been in existence in the city from 1882 but had never been allowed to operate in the High Street due to objections from the local traders.
