Exeter High Street, c1910, Exeter
Photograph of Exeter High Street, c.1910, Exeter
This image, taken by an unknown photographer, shows the west side of the street, looking from the Devon and Somerset Stores, past St Lawrence's Church, towards Castle Street and London Inn Square. The view appears to have been photographed from the entrance to Bedford Street and must have been taken between April 1905, when the electric tramway was opened, and August 1910, by which time the restaurant adjoining the church had been converted into a cinema. A similar photograph to this one, but showing the cinema adjoining the church, can be seen on the Exeter Memories website under the entry for the Empire Electric Theatre.
St Lawrence's Church and all the other buildings shown in this photograph were destroyed by enemy action in 1942. The site of the St Lawrence's Church is now occupied by the Co-operative Bank and there is a commemorative plaque in memory of the church on the exterior wall of the bank.
