Elizabethan Ceiling, Dartmouth
A lithograph of a "very rare Elizabethan ceiling in a House in the Old Butterwalk, Dartmouth, erected 1635." Lithograph by M. & N. Hanhart, published by V. Butteris, Assembly Rooms, Old Butterwalk.
This lithograph may represent the only surviving decorative plasterwork depiction of the Tree of Jesse, an artistic interpretation of the ancestral line from King David to Jesus Christ, according to the Holy Bible. The tradition of presenting genealogy through the symbol of a family tree may trace its roots from such depictions.
"A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots"- Isaiah, 1:1.
