Seaton Church

The Church of St Gregory is situated on the eastern edge of Seaton. It was built in the late 13th and early 14th century, with later additions and alterations, such as the tower which was added in the 15th century. The church was restored in 1860 by Edward Ashworth of Exeter. This pencil and wash drawing of the exterior St Gregory's Church, by an unknown artist, is dated 10th October 1901.

Edward Ashworth (1814-1896) was an architect and artist who was born at Colleton in the parish of Chulmleigh. He trained in London and, following a period spent abroad, set up an architectural practice at Exeter in 1846. Ashworth earned the reputation of being the leading ecclesiastical architect in the Westcountry and was responsible for rebuilding and restoring many churches in Devon. He rebuilt St Mary Major Church, Exeter, in 1865 and Topsham Church in 1874 and restored Wynards Almshouses, Exeter in 1853. Collections of his painting and drawings are held in the Devon Heritage Centre and Devon and Exeter Institution .
