Artist notes/journal, dated July 20 and July 21 1819.

 

[Working transcription:]

At Ilfracombe saw the Effect of a gale of wind on the

North Coast of Devon. The shore is extremely rocky &

the Breakers dashed over them with considerable force

while the wind carried the spray from them in all

directions.—the Colours of the Sea at Sun Set

were remarkably Beautiful. the distant part of

a greenish Grey. the light on the smooth part of the

wave near the Shore reflecting the yellow & red tints of

the Clouds & Sun & the Blue of the Sky. The Under part

of the Breakers as they began to roll over [???] the

Light thro them, a vivid Green was visible Some

times.- walked in the afternoon towards Bull Point

& about Halfway from Ilfracombe I saw Hartland

Point Rising over the Hills Lundy Island was very

Nearly seen & some Parts of the welch Coast were

Visible- July 20. 1819.

Saw the coast of Wales & the Mountains in land quite

distinct this Evening from a Point of Rock to the east.

                 rich yellow olive green [opposed?]

                 to the Bright Green of the [Herbage?]

                 in the fields & trees.
