Wood near the town of Clovelly in the Grounds of Sir

[J.?] H. Williams, Contains some good studies of very fine

Views Broken & torn by the Winds- the Cliffs [???] [???]

[???] on the Coast westwards of Clovelly fine. Lundy

Island seem as you descend from the Grounds of

Clovelly Court before you. The Grounds layed out in

Good [taste?] the walks [???] & well [???]

through the wood with a characteristic wildness-

the steps [rugged?] & very well adapted to the [Scenes?]

I saw on a rock a large Bird of a dark grey Colour with

its wings spread. Sea Gulls on another rock near

it & many flying backwards & forwards-

The Sea of a beautiful Colour varied by the [passing?]

Clouds from a Green to Blue and even Reddish Purple

& all the different varieties appearing at the same

time. The Greys of the distances much more Red than

the Sea--- The Effect of sunshine of the distant Cliffs very

vivid & the green much Brighter than it is Generally painted

The Sea breaking on a Rocky shore & the spray flying off from frag

ments of the rocks lying on the beach. sometimes the

sea only flowing thinly over & falling down the sides-

the Clouds partially hiding the distances & appearing

to touch the water. Distance seen between them very deep

Blue. the [tint?] of Distant sea Dark- the part where

the Clouds appeared to touch light- it had the Greenish

Colour with the silvery lights as it approached the

shore. The imployment of figures on the sea shore is highly

Picturesque, either in mending their Boats, Sails or nets

at Clovelly, Lime Stone is Burnt which furnishes other

incidents, men & Boys driving Horses laden with

the Stone to the Kilns.- figures Bathing & children running

about at the Edge of water & often in it. figures idle on

the Pier & standing on the Different Heights as you ascend the

town. -------------- July 18 1819.
