Many of the trees in Dartington Park & grounds worth
Drawing & some of them are good subjects.
Berry Pomeroy Castle very fine & most romantically placed
the Effect of the evening Sun [Strking?] on the Ruins & the
trees which grow near it at the summit of the rock on which
it stands while the whole [Dell?] was in shadow had a magic-
all Effect, the View from the field with a [??] of water in
the valley sparking like a gem in the Gloom of the Twilight was
likewise very fine, it lifted the Castle from the valley & gave
it a grandeur, which it deserved. we were fortunate in
seeing it under two such different points of view & at such
a time of the Evening. Turner was with me. July, 12. 1819.
At Dartmouth the Scenery is very Beautiful the view out of
the Harbour- the turn of the load by the lime kiln & on
the road to the Castle- Kingswear the town views
Beautifully, the Houses, piled one over the other,
The Houses in the upper road of the town.
Some remarkably fine specimens of [carved?]
wood & plaster Houses in the lower parts of
the town near the Quay- the Castle is not the
least like the one represented by Loutherbourgh in
the Picture Mr Worthington has of his-
the Echos were frequently [repeated?] & often times
very loud when a gun was fired by the water
side. – We [passed?] there a very beautiful Place
called Higher [Pensford?] & Lower [Pensford?]. Rather out
of the High Road from Totnes to Dartmouth on the
right hand not far from [Ashprington?].
The figures & incidents at Dartmouth excellent,
& many of the Houses [Combine?] well with the
[???] [rising?] to a Considerable Height & many [???]
[ascended?] by innumerable steps July 13. 1819.
