The Quay Gate, or Water Gate, was created in medieval times at the south-west corner of the City Wall. The arch crossed a steep, cobbled street which passed behind the Custom House and led down to the quayside on the River Exe. The quay was a bustling centre for trade and carts dragged the goods up the ramp through the Quay Gate and into the city. This gate was demolished in 1815 although JMW Turner made a drawing of it in 1811 on his visit to the city.

This image in pen and wash on paper c.1860 shows the remains of the gate as Townsend would have seen it, the dilapidated shops and houses adjoining it and a part of the City Wall following the demolition of the arch.
