Wreck of The Tehwija, Orcombe Point, 1907, Exmouth

The Tehwija, a Russian schooner, was wrecked off Orcombe Point, Exmouth, in October 1907. After sailing into a storm on the night of the 9th October, 1907, the ship's Captain signalled for the help of a pilot boat, but it was unable to reach the vessel in the weather. The ship then drifted towards Pole Sands, where the rudder snapped, and the crew took to the rigging. The Exmouth lifeboat was unable to reach them, but the majority were saved by the Teignmouth lifeboat, save the Captain's Pomeranian dog, which refused to board the boat. Eventually, the ship split into three and was washed onto the sands at Orcombe point. The dog was later found, still living, on the beach, and was reunited with the Captain.
